Easter

EASTER 2014
It was a crazy day! It was Ethan's 6th birthday on top of Easter. And even though that does not sound like a lot, well, it was! I thought we were all going to go mad!! We survived and oh, the memories we made! It was the a beautiful and sunny day and having everyone all together made it "perfect".

Being 6!

Six?! No, that can't be right! What! Where did the time go? Maybe I have miscounted and have the wrong year? Nope! None of which are true. Our Ethan is now six years old. And even as a spirited, smart, intelligent, I may add; Ethan has no true desire to sit and learn. We are prayerfully praying for his Kindergarden teacher. Bless her soul.

However, Ethan is ALL about learning how to get to the next level of Skylander and even acquiring additional Disney Infinity character. So learning how to spell his last name…well, I guess beating the latest "bad guy" is just more important. Besides, someone has to defend the Skylander's and their kingdom.

Its all going by too quickly. He says words like "confident" and asks if I have "good instincts". I replied; "If you don't know the meaning of a word you shouldn't be saying it. And his comeback was; "it means if you just know what the right thing is to do".  I guess he told me- literally.

When I began this incredibly non-productive blogging thing I was not confident. Perhaps because I read amazing novels, know brilliant writers that can turn common words and sentences into a work of art. All to say this. I was not confident in myself enough to begin being consistent because of my lack in confidence. But its just a blog, right? Yes and no. It just isn't' "any" blog its my blog to one day give my children and family. I want it to be "perfect" and well written. I want them to be proud of the writing I put on paper. So, as I have put off writing about Ethan on his sixth birthday something occurred to me. I tell the children to be "confident" in themselves because as you take that first hard step God will be right there to provide everything you need. It may be hard in the very beginning because beginnings are the hardest but the steps will become easier. I guess I should take my own advice. And perfectionism. I say to them; "it doesn't have to be perfect". Yet I expect it. Who am I kidding, they see that. My lack of confidence can be filled by a mighty and powerful God, who perhaps, has put on my heart to show them how He does work. God is working on me to step out of the boat and trust Him to guide me.

Back to Ethan. He can make anyone laugh, his wit is unmeasurable and if you want to the truth he will be the one to tell it. So be careful. I'm the "greatest mom in the world or the best mama he's ever had" when he is pleased with me but tell me to turn off the video games or go play in his room and I am told; "you don't love me, you hate me". We have manipulation down.

He loves BIG! Genuinely cares for people to a point where I see concern on his face and in his heart. He tells Nana that when she turns 80 she will no longer be able to drive. And that she needs to find a boyfriend because he doesn't want her to be alone. His heart is the biggest thing I love most about him. He senses disorder and wants to bring his humor and smile to restore laughter. He is there to aid his sister and big cousin when they are hurt. And when I am tired or frustrated those sweet arms wrap around my neck followed my a wet kiss on the cheek. He is my special boy. I was scared when I found out I was having a boy but what a blessing he is. I am learning and always will be learning with Ethan and I welcome it. Another prime example of how God provided me with everything I needed as I took the first steps with my son.

We were walking to the mailbox awhile ago and he asked me if I had dreams. I said yes I have dreams. And he looked at me and said; "don't even give up on your dreams, mama". What an old soul. I chuckled to myself because the similarities to him and Nora and sometimes uncanny. She too, has an old soul and is wise beyond her years. I love to have the two of them together because its more like brother and sister. I look at Ethan at times and see Nora at that age. And it reminds me how fast time is passing and how each moment I want to embrace and never forget.

If you mess with his sister or his big cousin be ready for the attack. He will take you out. I grin as I write this, but oh how true it is. There is nothing he wouldn't do for those girls. But on the same hand he can become so angry with them he could (and does at times) scream. When Ana is at school he plays in his room or in the room where I am at. He doesn't like to go outside by himself or get too involved in something that requires being alone. The moment Ana gets home, the first thing he asks is if she wants to go outside and play. The next thing I see is the two of them running off.

He is powerful and mighty and yet loving and a protector to those he loves and treasures. I will always pray that his might is used to serve God and be God's mighty tool.
We love you, Big E!

Simply Living

Have you ever come to a crossroad and think; "wow, what to do now?" Its been like that for us lately. I wonder so many times if I'm doing things correctly with our little ones. Am I giving them the right tools  to use in life and how much of the "good stuff" are they retaining. I have Ethan that is his own comedy act all in one, Nora that is older beyond her years and Ana that delights in pleasing the people she loves most. All three are so different yet the common denominator is that they love God and have a passion for doing right for Him. People might say that the kids learned how to love by faith because of us, but no, that's hardly the case. We laid the foundation of God truths by telling stories of the bible to them and showing how God is apart of our real life because He is a living God. But the most important ingredient has been prayer. Without prayer for our children, prayer for each other and ourself we will be depleted. It is prayer that has gotten us to where it is we need to go. The tough questions we are asked by our children have been answered through the guidance of the holy spirit through prayer. Sometimes "my crossroad" seems scary and even impossible- as it does now. But the truth in all this is that I am not alone. I know what it is that I need to do and that is pray. A simple task yet when having to quietly sit seems impossible; like trying to move a mountain alone. As Ethan told me this yesterday morning; "Mama, you know  what I love about you the most? "Your heart because you pray to God a lot." Talk about conviction. That boy convicted me on the spot and thank goodness for it because as I teach him in the end they are really teaching me.

My Mustard Seed

Today, was the most exciting day because Nora, Ana and Ethan got to see their grandmother get baptized. It felt as though I was back home today and seeing my mother-in-law make a public profession of faith made the day even sweeter. I'm not quite sure if Ana and Ethan truly understood what it meant but its one of those things that the "the seed was planted.

The seed that fell among the thorns represents those who hear God's word, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries of this life and the lure of wealth, so no fruit is produced. The seed that fell on good soil represents those who truly hear and understand God's word and produce a harvest of thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times as much as had been planted!"      (Matthew 13: 22-24)

Nora stood beside Rick as he was baptizing Jamie, aka; Grandma. It was an invitation that Jamie had asked Nora since she had a huge part with Jamie making her public decision. As Nora grows into a little lady and onto a lady of God, this memory will always be with her, and I pray that when she needs to feel God she will reflect back on this day. Trials will come our way, we will not always know the "why" answers but having memories as this, God will take us back to what made us first truly believe.

I often revert back to the memories that have kept my faith strong and allowed growth. Our God is so lovely because when we ask He will give us what we need. And in my life, there has been many times that He has given to me when I did not even know what to ask for. Isn't that beautiful!

I end by writing this; you never know who is watching you and the impact you are making on them. Just as a 9 year old did on her grandmother

What makes perfect?

Nora & Boo December 2012

Brandi, Ethan and Nora

Jimbo, Ethan and Nora
Ethan and Nora

Some people would look at a perfect day as one being pampered, watching old movies while its raining outside or snuggled on the couch with a great book. And all these things are excellent ingredients for making a perfect day but this was mine. Freezing cold, walking and sometimes sliding down an ice sculpture slide, marveling over amazing carved ice sculptures while wearing more clothes at one time that I could barely move in. And did I mention I had to go potty right after we assembled me in all my clothing. I waited.
The art work and the time it took for each piece to be designed, executed and brought to life was extraordinary. I had never seen anything so magical. And Nora and Ethan were embracing it and taking it all in. I loved watching them. And in case your wondering where Ana is- well, we call her Desiree. And the reason for that is because she hates the cold. So this particular evening she stayed with Mimi and Papa in their warm cozy home.
After the looking at Shrek on ice we ventured over the Opryland Hotel. There we saw a free show about Shrek and his friends. It was absolutely fascinating. The singers were amazing, the costumes were grand and even Jimbo and I felt like kids again. By this time, it was raining extremely hard. Good thing Shrek on ice was indoors. Jimbo being the kind person, got the car for us and we headed over to Opry Mills for dinner. We wanted to take Ethan to the Aquarium restaurant. He never sat in his chair. He would walk up and down to watch and see the fish. We had a wonderful meal and a meaningful time explaining fish to Ethan as well as googling his other questions. You sometimes gotta do what is necessary.
I could not have had a more perfect day. I got to spend time with Nora and I felt I got to see Ethan grow a little bit as he saw new things for the first time. And when you put Nora and Ethan together you see how very much like brother and sister they really are.
I can complain about many things. I could probably complain on cue- but not that night. It was perfect!

Oh, the Conversations

Today was a day that ended with me thinking how stickin' blessed I am to have Ana, Ethan and Nora. Putting all three together you sometimes get more information than you intended to know OR you end the night with your stomach hurting from laughing so hard. Tonight, my day ended with ALL my stomach muscles hurting. And even with moments I couldn't breathe.

Nora, Ana and I were sitting in a circle in Ana's room. Ethan was off defending his Skylander's from the evil forces. The girls and I decided to play a game where you draw a card and it has a family question for you to answer. Some of the questions consist of; "do you know how your mom and dad got engaged" or "what is a smell that reminds you of growing up" You get the picture. Nora draws a card to ask me the question. It read; "If you could have one wish come true- what would you ask for?" Ana went first and said; "I would ask for 65,000 stacks of cake just for me!" Nora and I busted out laughing. And this was an excellent answer from Ana because she loves cake! Now, let me paint a picture of Nora. She is sitting the circle, very prim and proper & with her school uniform on and says; "that is spoken like a true first grader." I literally fell back on the floor with tears in my eyes. Nora is in the fourth grade and she sounded like she was twenty!! Good Grief! Oh what a night it was. I love those girls so much!!

This next story happened last night. The newest thing for kids to do is make these rubber band type bracelets. They were cute last year but now they are a little pain in the neck because you turn and there everywhere- floor, between the couch cushions, on the beds and so forth. Ethan is pretty tidy with his room. However, Ethan will keep a gum wrapper someone gives him and treasure it always. But it will be kept neat in his room. He doesn't mind messing it up with HIS toys and when HE does. But cluttering his room with "girl"toys is not acceptable to Ethan. I get that. So last night Ana had left tons of the rubber bands on his floor in his room. It wasn't that many but enough she should've cleaned it up. Ethan looks at Jimbo and says; "I am tired of Ana leaving her things in my room. I'm gonna beat her little butt ass!!". Well, at first we were so caught off guard that we all laughed in silent. How, where, when did he get this? So Jimbo spoke to him about how that is not a nice thing to say even if she did leave her things in your room. Hopefully, this will be the last butt ass conversation we have.

Chatter

Today was a great day with super great attitudes. These days come very rare when we are home all day. It usually consists of fighting, "your breathing my air", and the best one "your not my friend". But today, I heard some blog worthy conversations. I peeked into our sunroom where Ana and Ethan were playing on the Wii U. Ana was playing a game and Ethan was encouraging her. I heard him say; "Ana you are rocking this game". I grinned and chuckled to myself. How cool to have a brother/sister relationship. I often wonder where God will lead each one of them. I am beginning to pray that all three continue to have a close bond regardless of age or miles put in between. They are all three amazing children with personalities as big as the sky. And how I pray God will keep them together to not only be who they are called to be but to be there for each other.

Great quotes from the week

Ethan- Jimbo had told Ethan to hurry up and get in the bath tub and Ethan's response; "Hold on and save your horses". We laughed out loud and said don't you mean "hold your horses" and he replied; "yep, that too."

Ana- In response to what I asked what she wanted to be when she grew up. "I want to be a teacher and then come home from work and make dinner for my children". I asked how many children she wanted to have. Ana- "I want to have six children". Mama- "How will you take care of all six children and still teach school?". Ana- "I will send them to high school".

Who We Are

I believe we are constantly changing and growing and thank goodness for that. Even though I am not a fan of change, it is necessary. As I watch Nora, Ana and Ethan grow into the person God designed them to be I am thankful for change.

Last night we were driving home from church and I asked what they were thankful for. Ana responded; "I am thankful for God and I'm also thankful for you and Daddy". My heart melted. Ethan replied that he was thankful for God and how he made everything. And he went on to say this: "You know what I learned at church? That the more we go to church the more we learn about God and that is totally cool." And in my mind I was thinking that as much as I did not want to leave "our old church" because it was familiar to me and it was a huge change God had a perfect plan for our family. And in the middle of complaining about the change, He still has blessed me with these conversations with my children. Who I wanted to be was not who God had in mind- it is much greater. I have no idea what God has designed for Nora, Ana and Ethan but what I do know is that I will be praying for them daily and hourly if need be. I want them to understand that being who we are is allowing God to have complete control over our lives, our mind, our body and spirit. How amazing to know that I can do ALL things through Christ. But how many times did I do all things through me. More than I can count, I can tell you that. How easier it would have been if I had followed His truths and been obedient. Going forward this year I want more for my family. I desire to control less and allow God's guidance to lead the way. I get nowhere successful without Him. And with this wisdom I want to show by example, I will follow God with all my heart and for Him to make who we are.

Ephesians 1:17-18 "I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. 18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people.."

Seriously!

I have no idea why I put blogging on my New Years resolution list! I have great memories written down of Ana and Ethan but I feel as though I need to blog. Who knows why! But when I blog I feel guilty of the things that I should be doing or the time I should be spending with the kiddos. Oh well.

I shall again, say that I am going to blog this year, turn it into a book for my parents for Christmas and never do it. Maybe I'll surprise even myself with this silly resolution.

Halloween 2011

This past Halloween was so much fun! Ana was five years old and Ethan was three. Halloween costumes can be either really "slutty" (yes, I went there) or too generic. With the kids being able to know and understand I wanted to really out thought into their attire. Ana was a Candy Corn Princess- although she called herself a Candy Corn "witch" and Ethan was our fierce pirate. They were so adorable. I took them to Portrait Innovations to have a picture of them in their costumes and to try to remember this special time. As Halloween quickly approached I began thinking; "all dressed up and nowhere to go". I didn't want to just settle for the traditional door to door but I was running out of time and options. The day of Halloween we picked my husband up from work and were going to go Trick or Treating in Thompson Station. As we were driving (and I am so wishing I could have done more) we looked and a local church was having a carnival free to the public. It was perfect! We ended up going, they had inflatables for the kids to play on, more candy than we have ever seen and we even managed to squeeze pizza in the Ana and Ethan. The church had hundreds of boxes of Dominos Pizza- so we bought a large, sat around and ate as a family and then went back to the action. The night was so much fun. Each room of the children's and preschool area had a game, activity or something for the kids to do. And as you were leaving you got to "trick or treat". Ana and Ethan returned home with 20 pounds of candy. It was hilarious. It was a crazy time with children running everywhere and not to mention on a sugar high. But as we were driving home, looking into the sugar induced Pirate and Candy Corn Princess I would not have changed one thing about our night. It was one that I will always remember and be thankful for.
I love you Ana and Ethan! You rock my world!

Sticky Fingers and Broken Robots

Our new year has begun in full motion. No stopping this family!
Jimbo had Ana and Ethan for the day so I could enjoy a quiet home all to myself. I was dealing with an awful headache and he thought a day home would be just what the doctor ordered. So he took the kids to breakfast, to Family Dollar and bought them a (cheap) toy and finally reached Mimi's house to let them play with their new (cheap) toy. Ethan is destructive with everything he plays with as well as looks at. He's our child that will take it apart to see why and how it works. So with his new purchased transformer robot toy it was no different. He ended up breaking part of it and so his big sister said; "let me see it". She tried but failed and ended up breaking it even more. So by this point, Jimbo was frustrated with them both and the fact that the (cheap) toy was so cheaply made. Go figure. He ended up (in anger) taking the toy and throwing it against the wall and it shattered into a million, zillion pieces. (Yes, zillion is a word when you have children) And what happened? Well, both Ana and Ethan burst into tears and were sobbing. I only know this part because I just happened to call to check on them. Call it a "Mom's intuition". Jimbo knew he was wrong and he did feel just horrible about overreacting. But he was tired of them breaking everything they get. So to make up for his "tantrum" he took them to Dollar General to get Ethan a new robot. He didn't want to go back to the same store in one day. At the register, Ethan handed the lady his toy and she said; "Oh how sweet you're getting a new toy". And Ethan replied; "Yep, Daddy got really mad and threw my other toy across Mimi's wall and it broke in a ton of pieces". Jimbo quickly stepped in with a bright red face and said; Oh, he tells tales all the time". Ana immediately said: No, Daddy Ehtan's right that did happen!". All I can say is "the truth will set you free". I am still laughing over this one and will for a long time.
So the next day (after the broken robot incident) you'd think life would go back to "our normal". Perhaps its because I spent too much time laughing at the Jimbo and the robot. Or how I asked him if we needed to paint Mimi's wall from robot scars.
Ethan was beyond tired but I wanted to wait a little longer before I put him down for a nap. Even at three years old Ethan still needs a nap some days. Looking back its one of those times I wish I had just put him in his bed. But again, I thought things would be fine. There weren't. I was in my bedroom folding laundry and I had left Ana and Ethan on the couch watching TV. Pretty simple. So in a few minutes Ethan comes into my bedroom and his hands are so shiney. And he keeps saying; Mama, help me. I have sticky glue on me". Just looking at him I thought he had some type of lotion. But I wondered where he could have gotten it. So I reached down (with both hands) and touched his hands. When I tried to break free I couldn't!! I squealed and instantly realized he had somehow gotten into super glue! I love this child but there ain't no way I'm going to be stuck to him. So I rushed us to the bathroom where I ran cold water over our hands and we broke loose. I was speechless for a minute of so. The next three hours Ana and I picked and pealed his hands from all the glue. He was absolutely tormented over the fact the glue would not come off. And I know how frustrating that feels because I had my own to try and get off. And while I wish this was all that to deal with its not. I still have to figure how I'm going to get the super glue off my kitchen and dining room floor. But that's for another day. That night, Ethan looked up at me and asked; "Mama, you mad at me?" I giggled and said: "No, son, I'm not. I love you both very much. God gave me you and I'm so happy you are my son and Ana is my daughter." And that is the truth. But from here on out all glue is now locked up. The kids were in the bed by the time Jimbo got home. I was in bed reading when he sat down next to me and said; "You wouldn't believe the day I had today- it was crazy".
I laughed and said; "Really? Huh, I wouldn't know about that".

New Year with New Adventures

How many times do we begin on a "new year high"? We're going to exercise, get that perfect job or just be a better person. I have come to realize that I will break my resolution(s) every time and for that I do not make them- anymore. This year I want to spend more time reading to my children; to instill that God loves them and His love with never fail. I've already seen families lose loved ones and this is just the second day of 2012. I was shown this morning that loving people is the best gift you can give them. You see, loving, is the kindest act there is. I can go out and buy Ana and Ethan gifts all day. But what is that "teaching" them? Nothing. I want them to see how much they can give just by loving others. Love produces acts of kindness, generosity, selfishness and so on. As we go about our day today it will consist of drawing pictures to cheer our family and friends up, baking cookies for a dear friend and continuing to pray for those that need it. I want them to be "Tebow" of their generation. Happy 2012!

Bath Tub Talk

This morning began as any other wild day beginning with Ana wanting to play dolls in the bath tub and Ethan wanting his "emergency truck" aka: fire truck. My mother-in-law, Jamie was going to be at our house at 9:00am to bring over a few things. I wanted to have coffee for us to (hopefully) enjoy and also wanted to make the kids muffins that they had been asking for. Everything was going smoothly until bath time. I had put Ana and Ethan in the bath tub together and had just gotten out Ana out when I realized I had forgotten to get her panties. I told her to begin getting her shirt on and I would run and get her socks and panties. Ethan, at this point was still in the bath tub and quiet. (that should have clued me in) I come right back and Ana looks at me and says; "Momma, you not going to be happy". I said; "What is it?" And she replied; "Ethan pooped in the bath tub". I began to laugh and asked her; "Well, will go in there and clean it for me?". She wrinkled her nose and said; "No, that is GROSS Mama". So I walked in the bathroom and there he was standing up in the bath tub holding a pile of poop- just for me. I said; "Oh, thank you, buddy". And Ethan replied; "You welcome. You mad Mama?I go poop. Here you go". Thank goodness it was solid because it could have been worse. And I know this from experience. So I get him out and he is still as a statue while I clean the tub and re-run him new bath water. It was an interesting start to a busy day. I have to say, we had a wonderful visit with Grandma Jamie and no poop in the world could have ruined that.

What's Your Name

Growing up my Dad had a nickname for everyone he ever met. My grandfather’s name was James Roth and he nicknamed him "hot rock". Why? My Dad explained to me that he had a hot temper and he was the most stubborn person you would ever meet. He also said that if my grandfather had it in his head that the stop sign was green he would argue with you that it was actually green. (Well, now I know where I get my stubbornness from.) My Dad also had a name for my grandmother and it was "granny franny". Not the best choice of names but then again, my grandmother would not expect any less from him. The list (of his victims) goes on but the one that has affected me the most is the one he gave me when I was 12 years old. How bad could it be, right? Well, it is so bad that is has gone through three generations and is still holding strong. My sister, Haley was having a hard time pronouncing my name. She was still really small and we were working with her on her words. My name came out one day as "Boo". And once Dad caught wind of it and the name Boo has stayed with me ever since. It has stayed so much that even my niece calls me Boo. My children actually call me that when they want to pick on me. (which is quite regularly) It’s the nickname that will never die. I can remember my father’s co-workers would also call me Boo and now my husband family also calls me Boo every once in awhile.

I began thinking today of all the nicknames I gave my family that have stayed. My grandfather that I was talking about earlier I named him "Pa". And my grandmother I called "Mom". And yes, it gets quite confusing when we are all together. My aunt, whose real name is Jennifer is now "Kiki" to all who know her. I'm trying to get her to change her facebook name to Kiki. My Dad is now "Papa" to his grandchildren and even me. I think that name fits him quite well. And my Mom is "Mimi". She makes a great Mimi.

My niece, Nora named my husband "Bubba". And of coarse, my Dad has kept it up. That one is really funny. So even our husbands are not without the curse of the nicknames. When you think about it, it says something for someone to give you a nickname; like that they feel comfortable enough to have a special "name" for you. It creates a family environment and that place you can call home. I am honored to carry the name that my sister gave me and my Dad will never let die- Boo.

Ana and Ethan have already changed the names of already some of our family members. Justin, my sister's husband (and my husband's brother) is now known as JJ. Ana was having a hard time saying Justin and it one day came to her that he was JJ. Justin will always be JJ to my kids. And Ethan does call my Dad, Papa but he is recently calling him, Rod-ger. (translation is Roger) Its funny that even though the nickname was decided on as Papa- my son is breaking all the rules! But what can I say; Ethan is turning out to be a lefty like his Papa Roger and is the spitting image of my Dad. I also envisioned myself as being called, Mom. But my kids call me "Mama". Once we finally got the gift of children I think I would have settled with Boo. I was so longing to be a Mom. And my husband is "Daddy". As it should be.

Nicknames will change or remain the same but as the person carrying the name we will be the blessed ones. For a child to be creative by selecting that one and special name is a memory that will last forever. So cherish what name your kids, grandkids selected for you because it could be the best gift you could ever get.

Good Night My Angels

Nighttime is always a battle and yet a precious time in the Ford home. There is never a dull moment when you put a high maintenance diva, Ana and our power house dragon, Ethan together. You never know what the will become of your night. I remember one evening I was at my parents and complaining how I needed to get home to get them in the bath and bed. I told my Dad that it is so hard and draining and he replied; "Its the last stretch till you are free for the evening". Well, that may very well be true but its that last stretch that takes it all from me. Many of nights I have laundry that is breeding within itself that needs to be done and other things that have not gotten done. So instead, I sit in front of the TV (sometimes on) and stare at it. I wonder how these super mom bloggers do it. I can barely hold my eyes open when the kids are in the bed.

Tonight was a little different, though. Both Ana and Ethan were so tired they were sitting on my bed and not fighting. Amazing! I put Ana to bed first and told her that I loved her and she had been such a good girl today. I kissed her on the forehead and she wrapped her arms around me. She usually doesn't do this. I held on to her and said how glad I was that God made me her "Momma". It was a sweet moment that I will always treasure. I turned out her light and blew her a kiss.

Then came Ethan. He asked if he could finish watching a program that was on and I said he could. He had taken a four hour nap today and had been really great. So I felt since Ana had not napped he could have this small privilege. He was sitting between us on the bed when he reached up and gave his Dad a big kiss on the cheek. Jimbo looked down and said; "Thank you, Ethan". Ethan replied: "Your welcome, Daddy. uuvvv u. (Translation: Love You) He then looked at me and gave me a giant kiss on the cheek and told me he loved me too. I was so proud of Ethan for giving kisses on his own. He is acknowledging what it means to be gentle but most of all loving. Both my children love and are becoming even more aware of others. Ana asked me the other day, when I hit my knee, if I was okay. I told her I was just fine, just clumsy. Ethan recognizes when his sister is hurt and asks her if she is all right. They care for one another and even though I can teach that to a certain point I know, with all my heart, God is hearing my prayers. He is hearing my worries and concerns and He is responding to me by giving these moments. I know Ana and Ethan are His children- I am there earthly Mom. Each day I am so grateful that my Holy Father trusted me enough to give me these two amazing kids.

Hosea 11:4

4 I led them with cords of human kindness,
with ties of love.
To them I was like one who lifts
a little child to the cheek,
and I bent down to feed them.

Giving Back

I've been feeling convicted to reach out and do something for a family, child, or adult this Christmas season. We usually do something, don't get me wrong but I have been wanting my children to see it more than ever. When a commercial advertises the latest toy on the television they both want it. And this goes on all day long. Its frustrating because Ana and Ethan have so much. I want to teach them the importance of giving and how it makes another person "smile". I began to research how I should go about teaching such a simple yet complex act.

1. The first thing we are going to do is make a "Maggie Feeding Schedule". This way they can be apart of feeding her. I've made a chart so Ana and Ethan can put a sticker on it when she gets her food. Neither of my children like to get hungry. So first, we will begin by teaching that all animals need to fed and Maggie, our new dog, is one of them.

2. The second step which goes hand in hand with the first step and that is we are going to make a bird house. Well, we are going to assemble one that is pre-made. And then paint it as a family. Again, Ana and Ethan can see that even the outside animals need food and we will add this to our "feeding chart". We've been so blessed to have a great back yard. We get all kinds of animals from rabbits, squirrels, to the occasional deer. But throughout the year we have all kinds of birds that we watch. Its really amazing to see from our sun room.

3. No matter how many feeding charts I make Ana and Ethan will learn by example. They may not be old enough to know how they want to give this year but they can watch me. As I reflect on what do, they will be right by my side watching.

Doing the smallest task as coloring a book mark for their teachers is teaching them something. I have to remember that its the small things that make the biggest difference. Mother Teresa said; "We can do no great things, only small small things with great love". Love and loving others is what it is all about. And hopefully, I will be able to teach that to my children this holiday season.
Merry Christmas!

TN Thanksgiving 2010

Today was indeed my first Tennessee Thanksgiving that I have ever had. It was really special with bittersweet moments. Ana and Ethan are getting older and it is too hard to drive to Alabama, have lunch and be back to share Thanksgiving with my husband’s family. Sounds simple but it is tiresome and a struggle. After my grandfather passed it is even more difficult to want to continue with the same tradition. We all needed a little change, not too much, but something that made it a little different. No matter how we "change" it up, he will no longer be here and that is the saddest part.

God was faithful and allowed so many laughs throughout the day. It all began this morning, with Ana. Oh, what a blessing this child is! She can find humor in just about anything. She wanted a granny smith apple for breakfast. So Jimbo peeled it for her and then sampled one. His face got all tight and said; Ana, this is the sourest apple ever! She laughed and said it was "yummy". As we were having our coffee and breakfast Jimbo looked at the amount of apple Ana had on her plate and told her if she ate all that she was going to have to poop for the most part of the day. I smacked his arm, laughed, and told him not to say that. Who thinks of things like this at the breakfast table?! Oh, yeah, that would be my husband. Nasty!! So I told Ana not to listen to him and she laughed and said; "okay, mama". Later on I went into my closet to begin thinking about to wear for the day. Do I go casual, really casual, dressy, or dressy funky? About the time I had my train of thought going my "crew" had followed me into the bathroom. Ana informed me that she had to go to the bathroom and Jimbo, for whatever reason decided he needed to join us. (Ethan is still asleep during this time) So, I begin to pick up where I left, deciding on my outfit, and Ana says; "Hey Mama, I'm going to go poo poo, okay?" I said; "Okay, sweetie". Jimbo starts laughing and said; "See, I told you that big apple was going to make you poop". I told him not to bother her and plus, an apple would not work that fast. We go back and forth and all of the sudden Ana speaks up and says; "Hey guys, trying to poop. Get out please." We all began to laugh so hard! So we gave her the privacy she needed and I went back into my closet to get yet another outfit out.

Lunch at my parents was simple, fun and so relaxing. We didn't feel rushed and the meal was amazing. My sister had made two soups, three appetizers and mom picked up sandwich meats, cheese and breads. I made a dessert that actually turned out. Nora, Ana and Ethan all played so well together and laughed the entire time. There is nothing better than hearing the three of them get together. The love they have for one another is so tight and strong. God has really blessed us with these children. We left in time for Ana and Ethan to take naps. We wanted them to feel refreshed at my husband’s side of the family. Again, we had a wonderful meal; the visit was relaxing and fun. The kids loved being together and playing games with one another. We ended the night on the drive back home listening to Christmas music and looking at Christmas lights. Ana and Ethan are getting older where they are taking an interest in lights and who has the most on their side of the car.

Yes, I am thankful for my family, friends, and all the blessings I have been given. I am so blessed to be living in a wonderful home, have freedom and know the love of Christ. I'm saddened that the months are getting longer from the last time I saw my grandfather and I miss him so much. If I could just get one hug from him, where no words were spoken I would be just fine. But that is not how this thing works and I know that. I just miss him and no matter how we make simple changes the reality is that he is gone and that doesn't make the pain any easier. He will always be apart of my heart. My memories that I treasure will remain with me always and that is my comfort.

As I write this note, that hopefully one day my children will read and understand, I am surrounded with the sounds of Christmas music and a happy heart.

Happy Thanksgiving from Tennessee!

Nighttime Love Bugs

I always find it fascinating how each child is totally different from one another when it comes to going to bed. Ana's first year with us she screamed bloody murder every single night. It was awful and then it just became annoying. We wanted to make it an enjoyable time with her but she was going to put up a major fight. Now, she is our little angel. She has her routine down and goes right to bed. With Ana, I wanted to hold her, love on her and give her the night time (rocking chair) rocks that I had missed. But she is more independent, even then she was so I had to come up with something that she and I could bond over. Our ritually is; I tuck her in, pray over her and give her kisses. Right before I leave her room I tell her to call me if she needs anything and then I blow her kisses. She blows me kisses right back and sticks them in her (pretend) pocket. Also, at night time is when she wants to know the full agenda of what we are going to be doing the next day. I give her the run down and you can see the contentment on her face. She is my structured little one. I've always wanted to give her back a piece of her early childhood that I missed. But its like she doesn't miss it and wants to continue to go forward- as it should be. Ana requires more sleep than Ethan and when she doesn't get her regular hours she has meltdowns that you would not believe. Tears are shed over the slightest thing and if something is out of place, well, lets just say, its not a pretty sight. This is what makes Ana, Ana. Her personality is filled with wit and humor. She will always keep me on my toes. I love you, beautiful girl!

Sweet Hugs

Well, today was like every Monday morning- we were running late. It never fails that on the day we have to be somewhere everyone decides to sleep in- including me. It would make sense to use an alarm clock but when you have two kids that wake up between 5:30am-6:00am, WHY?? Its these days that I remind myself to go out and get one.
It all worked out and God had me just where he wanted me this morning. I am in a Monday morning bible study group and even though it is a "rushed" feeling I am always truly blessed once I get there. This morning, Ethan tried so hard not to cry when I dropped him off.. Oh, he wanted so bad to hold it in and play...but he just couldn't. I knelt down and told him how proud I was of him and I would be right back. His favorite teacher was in there and he went straight to her. She loves on him but then lets him be a "boy". Gotta love girls like that. I decided to pick Ethan up first since he was the one that was first dropped off. Plus, Ana was still outside with her class playing. He was proud to see me and we squeezed each other. I had him in my arms and told him to say "bye-bye". He blew his teacher a kiss and then wanted to get down. As he got down he ran right over to her and wrapped his arms around her neck. I was so shocked and yet so proud all at the same time. Kinda made me think that continuing to work on gentleness, patience and love is finally paying off with our little man. He may not always be the most "gentle dragon" but his heart is as big as he is.
I love you, Ethan and I love the way you love.
